Caesar Creek Nature Preserve, led by Dick Moseley
This state nature preserve is located adjacent to Caesar Creek State Park and is downstream of Caesar Creek Lake Dam which was built by the U.S. Corps of Engineers and completed in 1978. The preserve’s prime feature is the gorge which was formed by glacial meltwater cutting down through the Ordovician limestone and shale creating cliff walls which rise nearly 180 feet above the stream. The preserve has a diverse array of habitats including forests of beech, maple, oak and hickory, floodplains of sycamore and cottonwood with rich herbaceous flora, and successional fields. A variety of prairie species are also found on the shallow soils of the cliffs and cliff edges. This 483-acre preserve was dedicated on January 2, 1975 and preserves a two-mile section of this tributary of the Little Miami State & National Scenic River.
Huffman Prairie Natural Landmark led by Daniel Boone
Huffman Prairie is 112 acres and is one of the largest tallgrass prairie remnants in Ohio. The prairie has a large variety of prairie plants typical of tallgrass prairies and is home to the endangered smooth green snake, 13-lined ground squirrel, 200 species of moths, 30 species of butterflies, and several species of field-loving birds. The prairie is located off State Route 444 east of Dayton and can be accessed using the Twin Base Golf Course entrance. The prairie is on Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was designated a State Natural Landmark in 1986.
Doorley Natural Area (private), led by Dave Nolin
This privately-owned natural area has a diverse array of habitats including xeric prairie on marl substrate, with adjoining white oak woodlands/savanna remnant and two fen areas as well as a wetland shrub community, and young upland woods. With all these habitats, one can find a wide variety of plant species on this unique site. The Doorley family have given us special permission to visit this site which is located near Pearl’s Fen, 4535 Byron Road, Fairborn, Ohio 45324. We will meet there and caravan to the Doorley property which is less than a mile away. If there is time, the tour may include a visit to Pearl’s Fen which is a Greene County Park. There is a parking lot at Pearl’s Fen and a boardwalk trail to view the large number of the blooming plants this time of year.
